Nick Van Winkle is one of our great members here at Freakin. He is a well respected father, fire fighter, and role model for members here in Pembroke Pines. Most days Nick is coming off a long shift at work to get to his favorite 9am class with his buddies. As an extremely dedicated member who’s results speak for themselves, Nick has always been encouraging to his fellow fitness enthusiasts. If he isn’t laying on the ground in complete exhaustion, he is motivating others to finish their work. I coudn’t ask for a better role model in our gym.

Tell us about yourself?
I’m a father of 2 boys and married to a wonderful (Colombian) woman. I’ve been a firefighter for just about 7 years. I’m turning 32 next month and I’ve never felt better.

What made you start Crossfit?
I found myself 30 pounds overweight and wanted to explore my options on losing weight without sacrificing too much muscle. I also had a few friends who had been crossfitting for several years and recommended FCF.

What have you learned since joining Freakin CrossFit?
Where can I begin? I’ve not only learned proper form on all barbell movements and gymnastics, but I have gained knowledge on my eating habits. FCF provides a positive atmosphere where the bond is truly strong and the education is vast.

What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
Murph with my pals.

What’s your favorite exercise movement?

What are your CrossFit goals?
To continue to gain muscle while maintaining my current body fat percentage.

What does your nutrition look like? Has it changed since starting CrossFit?
I have learned from fellow FCF members on how to plan and log my food. My fitness pal is awesome!

What is one tip you would give someone who is thinking about starting CrossFit or just started?
It can be intimidating at first but once you attend your first week, you will be hooked like the rest of us.

When you’re not CrossFitting, what is your favorite thing to do?
I love to spend time with my kiddos. We love to fish, play baseball, and sometimes get in the quick video game here and there.

Anything else that you would like to add:
It’s been a little over 1 year since I joined FCF and I have truly made some lifetime bonds while working out here. It’s more than just a gym, it’s become a lifestyle.
